Common characteristics of decision support systems include facilitation, interaction, and task-oriented activities within the system. Other characteristics may also exist, such as ancillary options or measures of decision impact. Most effective decision support systems will have these features readily available. Those who create and implement the system are often responsible for measuring its effectiveness and proper application.

Facilitation helps ensure the system provides the correct data and information for upcoming decisions. The decision-making activities and processes must coincide when using a support system. 3.How is MIS implemented in an organization? Explain

Answer : Implementation of an Information Management System

The implementation of the system is a management process. It brings about organizational change; It affects people and changes their work style. The process evokes a behavior response which could be either favorable or unfavorable depending upon the strategy of system implementation.

In the process of implementation, the system designer acts as a change agent or a catalyst. For a successful implementation he has to handle the human factors carefully. The user of the system has a certain fear complex when a certain cultural work change is occurring. The first and the foremost fear are about the security to the person if the changeover from the old to new is not a smooth one. Care has to be taken to assure the user that such fears are baseless and the responsibility, therefore, rests with the designer. The second fear is about the role played by the person in the organization and how the change affects him. On many occasions, the new role may reduce his importance in the organization, the work design may make the new job impersonal, and a fear complex may get reinforced that the career prospects may be affected. There are certain guidelines for the systems designer for successful implementation of the system. The system designer should not question beyond a limit the information need of the user.

Relational databases have often replaced legacy hierarchical databases and network databases because they are easier to understand and use. Business owners and managers use the information to make decisions, among other things. The expanding variety and use of information technology—particularly computers—allows companies to automate this critical business function. Just as a military general must have an information management system in place to gather intelligence on enemy forces, corporate managers and officers need a similar information system to gather the corporate intelligence necessary to make critical decisions.
