Q. 1.       Explain the methods to be adopted for hazard reduction.

Answer: Most treatment measures have both physical and chemical aspects. The appropriate treatment technology for the hazardous wastes depends on the nature of the wastes. The type of physical treatment to be applied to wastes depends strongly upon the physical properties of the material treated, including the state of matter, solubility in water and organic solvents, density, volatility, boiling point and melting point.

Physical Treatment Methods:Various physical treatment methods adopted in industry are: adsorption, resin adsorption, sedimentation, electro dialysis, reverse osmosis, solvent extraction, distillation, evaporation and filtration.




Q. 2.       Explain earthquake Prevention, Management and Preparedness Strategy.

Answer:In the Earthquake Preparedness Strategy, the City identified actions to help prepare for an earthquake. We have further identified eight high-priority actions that are the most important to address. This brings us closer to our goal to lessen the impact of an earthquake on the city. The eight high-priority actions are to:

Q. 3.       What are the key issues arising from the management of solid waste following disasters? Explain.

Answer:Waste management is considered to be the weakest phase in responding to a disaster. This became apparent when Sri Lanka suffered enormously from the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004. The City of Galle located on the south coast was severely affected by this event, causing some 4000 deaths and destroying over 15000 houses. The Construction Waste Management (COWAM) project funded by the European Union from 2005-2009




Q. 4.       Explain Fire Safety Precautions against Electricity.

Answer:About 60% fires are of electric origin on account of electric short circuit, overheating, overloading, use or non standard appliances, illegaltapping of electrical wires, improper electrical wiring, carelessness and ignorance etc. It can lead to serious fire and fatal accidents, if proper instructions are not followed. Such incidents can be minimized to a great extent if adequate fire precautions are observed. Electricalfires spread rapidly especially in buildings and cause loss of lives and property. It is, therefore, necessary to act fast. Raise an alarm for help. Switch off power supply to de-energise the equipment. Use drysand, CO2,




Q. 5.       Explain the use of New and Improved Technology for Monitoring, Assessing, Forecasting and Communication of Information in Natural disasters.
