Q. 1. a. What do
you think are the reasons for low people productivity in India?
b. Compare and
analyze India’s productivity with respect to other countries?
c. What suggestions
do you offer to improve the situation?
Answer:a. What do
you think are the reasons for low people productivity in India?
There are many
factors responsible for the low productivity in Indian agriculture. The
important among these are as follows:
(i) Demographic
Pressure:India is a thickly populated country. According to 2001
Census, 72.2 per cent people live in rural areas. The burden of increasing
population falls on land.
(ii) Small Size
of Holdings:Expert studies in agriculture put the average size of holding
at only 1.80 hectares. Not only the agricultural holdings are small but
b.Compare and
analyze India’s productivity with respect to other countries?
Answer: The Global
Competitiveness Report (GCR) 2009-10 published by the World Economic Forum
(2009) provides the ranks for Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) and scores for
various countries along with their component indices. These indices try to
capture both the micro and macro determinants of global competitiveness. The
pillars of GCI (as outlined in GCR, 2009) are classified into the basic
requirements (institutions, infrastructure,
c.What
suggestions do you offer to improve the situation?
Answer: Improvement of
agricultural methods and productivity to reduce the need to cut down additional
forest land. Tropical forests cannot be maintained unless agricultural
productivity is greatly improved. However, to feed the projected population of
the mid-21st century even at present levels, not to mention a level approaching
that of developed countries, agricultural efficiencies would have to be far
greater than is currently the case
Q. 2. List the
elements of operations strategy. Explain any TWO elements of operations
strategy.
Answer:Elements of
operation strategy Operations strategy comprises six components:
1. Positioning the
production system: Positioning the production system in manufacturing , means
, selecting the type of product design, type of production processing system
and the type of finished goods inventory policy for each major product line the
business plan. It involves selecting the product design, the production system
and the inventory policy for the finished goods for each product line.
1. Two basic types
of product design are custom
Q. 3. What are
the basic capacity (production) options a company can choose?
Answer: Capacity planning
is the process of determining the production capacity needed by an organization
to meet changing demands for its products. In the context of capacity planning,
design capacity is the maximum amount of work that an organization is capable
of completing in a given period. Effective capacity is the maximum amount of
work that an organization is capable of completing in a given period due to
constraints such as quality problems, delays, material handling, etc. The
phrase is also used in business computing as a synonym for
Q. 4.Write short
notes on:
a. Qualitative
methods of forecasting
b. Taguchi’s
quality loss function
Answer: a. Qualitative
methods of forecasting: Delphi method: Perhaps the best-known
method for generating a forecast using “experts”. Rather than getting experts to meet
face-to-face, the chosen experts are sent a survey or questionnaire (by post or
email). Each expert completes the survey
without reference to any other contributor. The replies to the survey are
analysed, summarised and then returned back to the experts so that they can
reconsider their responses and views after learning about the views of the
other experts.
Panel method: This method of
sales forecasting
b. Taguchi’s
quality loss function
Genichi Taguchi
provided a whole new way to evaluate the quality of a product. Traditionally,
product quality has been a correlation between loss and market size for the
product. Actual quality of the product was thought of as an adherance to
product specifications. Loss due to quality has usually only been thought of as
additional costs in manufacturing (i.e. materials, re-tooling, etc.) to the
producer up to the time of shipment or sale of the product. It
Q. 5.Describe the
process of value analysis.
Answer: It is a strategy
that businesses use to determine whether all of their operational expenses are
necessary and if they could be operating more efficiently. Process value
analysis looks at what the customer wants and then asks if each aspect of
operations is necessary to achieve that result. The goal of process value
analysis is to eliminate unnecessary expenses incurred in the process of
creating a good or service without sacrificing customer satisfaction.
In conducting
PVA, managers must look at
Q. 6. Write short
notes on
a. Tools for
implementation of operations
b. Fixed position
layout
Answer: a. Tools
for implementation of operations
Project planning,
implementation and operations tool
·
Unique: no other firm has developed a single source software
package integrating the investment and engineering components required to
deliver successful projects
·
On time and on budget:

b. Fixed position
layout
A fixed position layout is one of the three basic options for
laying out facilities to produce goods or deliver services, the other options
being a process layout or product layout . A fourth option, the cell layout, is
actually a hybrid facility arrangement that combines some of the principles of
fixed position and product layouts. The term “fixed position” implies that the
product remains (more or less) stationary and all materials, equipment, labor,
instructions, etc. are brought to the place of work. The service equivalent
might be where the “customer”
