1. Write a note on the following

a) Optical Character Readers (OCR)
Answer : OCR (optical character recognition) is the recognition of printed or written text characters by a computer. This involves photoscanning of the text character-by-character, analysis of the scanned-in image, and then translation of the character image into character codes, such as ASCII, commonly used in data processing.


In OCR processing, the scanned-in image or bitmap is analyzed for light and dark areas in order to identify each alphabetic letter or numeric digit.


b) Magnetic Ink Character Reader (MICR)
Answer : MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) is a technology used to verify the legitimacy or originality of paper documents, especially checks.

 5. List the five major activities of an operating system in regard to process management.

The operating system manages many kinds of activities ranging from user programs to system programs like printer spooler, name servers, file server etc. Each of these activities is encapsulated in a process.
