Caselet 1 (15 Marks):
In 2020, Netflix became the largest
entertainment company in the world in terms of market capitalization. There is
a further chance for growth for Netflix as more people have remained indoors
due to the impact of Covid-19.
The success of Netflix can be attributed to the
company’s fair use of opportunities and its keen understanding of the market.
What started initially as DVD business has now evolved into a market leader of
home entertainment business.
Netflix was founded by Reed Hastings and Marc
Randolph in 1997 as a rent-by-mail DVD service that used a pay-per-rental
model. Customers had to browse a list of available movies and shows and place
their orders with Netflix. They would receive their list by post and had to
send back by post after viewing. This was an innovation in DVD distribution at
that time, one of the many adopted by Netflix.
Since then, Netflix has evolved into a
streaming service that allows its customers to watch a wide variety of video
entertainment on thousands of Internet-connected devices. It is a
direct-to-consumer subscription video service.
The second innovation was the personalized
movie recommendation system, which used the ratings of members to accurately
predict choices for all members. This was such a popular system that resulted
in a sharp hike in the number of Netflix subscribers.
In 2007, Netflix started another innovative
practice of ‘streaming’ which allowed members to instantly watch television
shows and movies on their personal computers.
In 2013, Netflix pioneered the screening of
original content. The movies and TV shows were highly popular and some of them
were also nominated to the Emmy awards.
These innovations made Netflix very popular
globally, with 50 million subscribers worldwide.
Answer the following Questions:
A. Discuss the innovational journey of Netflix from its inception
in 1997 to 2020. (8 Marks)
Answer: When Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph
founded Netflix (formerly known as Kibble) in 1997, the company appeared to be
little more than an upstart DVD rental business whose only real value
proposition was the mail-order element of its operation. Fast forward two
decades and Netflix has become one of the biggest TV and movie studios in the
world, with more subscribers than all the cable TV channels in America
combined. How did Netflix go from renting movies to making them in just 20
years?
Netflix is an inspirational example of a
B. Many experts consider the Netflix practices of ‘streaming
directly to customers’ and ‘screening of original content’ disruptive
innovation in the field of entertainment. Do you agree? Justify your answer. (7
Marks)
Answer: Disruptive innovation is when a new
entrant targets overlooked segments with a new offering (and often a new
business model) that is more affordable, convenient or simpler than the
existing offering. The new offering doesn’t match existing offerings on traditional
performance criteria, but the ignored customers don’t care; they prefer the
affordability and accessibility of the new offering. The new entrant gets a
foothold and over time takes more and more of the existing market, eventually
displacing the incumbent.

Caselet 2 (15 Marks):
The Leadership Development Center at Ford
Motors offers four core programs in leadership. They are tailored to meet
leadership demands at different levels of the organization. They are aimed at
identifying, selecting, and developing next generation leaders.
The New business leader program comes at the
primary level. This program helps participants to identify innovative ideas
that transform business. By the year 2001 the participants came up with 600
Quantum idea projects, which had specific impact on business. Participants of
this program develop their leadership skills while they take ideas from the
conception to the implementation stage.
The Leadership for the new economy program is
meant for leaders at the next level. The program aims at helping participants
identify new ways to work. The program enables leaders to deliver good business
results, and enrich the lives of their subordinates by using new economy tools.
The program also helps participants to have a ’total leadership perspective’ to
integrate work, home, community, and self.
The Experienced leader challenge program
focuses on delivering improved business results by reducing costs and
generating revenues, and employing cross-functional teams. Participants develop
their capacity for leadership by working in an environment that enhances new
business knowledge, and demands broad, cross-functional networks for specific
results.
The Capstone program is meant for leaders at
the highest level of the organization. This program prepares people to take up
senior leadership responsibilities. Projects taken up as a part of the program
are strategic in nature. Senior leaders participate in coaching, teaching, and
evaluating participants.
Answer the following Questions:
A. Discuss how Ford Motors prepares people to take up senior
leadership positions and identify new ways of working. (8 Marks)

questions; senior management has set the direction. In our 2000 Corporate
Citizenship Report, chairman William Clay Ford Jr. writes:

Discuss all the activities that are considered suitable for the ‘primary’
level. (7 Marks)

A group in the workplace is usually made up of
