Question. 1. Elaborate the Concept of Productivity in production and operation management. Discuss different Ways to improve productivity.

Answer:Productivity is usually expressed in one of three forms: partial factor productivity, multifactor productivity, and total productivity. Each one is now discussed.

Question. 2. Explain the meaning and characteristics of a product.

Answer:Product is one of the important elements of marketing mix. A marketer can satisfy consumer needs and wants through product. A product consists of both good and service. Decisions on all other elements of marketing mix depend on product. For example, price is set for the product; promotional efforts are directed to sell the product; and distribution network is prepared for the product. Product is in the center of marketing programme. Therefore, product has a major role in determining overall success of marketing efforts.


Question. 3. Define the Process of Production Planning and Control.

Answer:Production planning and control is a predetermined process which includes the use of human resource, raw materials, machines etc. PPC is the technique to plan each and every step in a long series of separate operation. It helps to take the right decision at the right time and at the right place to achieve maximum efficiency.

The objectives of PPC are as follows:
Question. 4. What do you understand by the term ‘inventory’? Explain various types of inventories.

Answer:Inventory is commonly thought of as the finished goods a company accumulates before selling them to end users. But inventory can also describe the raw materials used to produce the finished goods, goods as they go through the production process (referred to as "work-in-progress" or WIP), or goods that are "in transit."

Question. 5. Explain the Process of Quality Control.

Answer:Quality control (QC) is a procedure or set of procedures intended to ensure that a manufactured product or performed service adheres to a defined set of quality criteria or meets the requirements of the client or customer.

QC is similar to, but not identical with, quality assurance (QA). QA is defined as a procedure or set of procedures intended to ensure that a product or service under development (before work is complete, as opposed to afterwards) meets specified


Question. 6. Write short notes on the following:
a. Alfred Weber’s theory of industrial location.

Answer:Leaning heavily on work developed by the relatively unknown Wilhelm Launhardt, Alfred Weber formulated a least cost theory of industrial location which tries to explain and predict the locational pattern of the industry at a macro-scale. It emphasizes that firms seek a site of minimum transport and labor cost.


b. Influence of government on industry location.

Answer:Many important geographical factors involved in the location of individual industries are of relative significance, e.g., availability of raw materials, power resources, water, labour, markets and the transport facilities.

Government policy. Industry develops from an area where the assistance of the local government can be found. This assistance can include investments in terms of capital, even location of industries in the country, search of market outside for industrial products. In most cases many politicians create industries in their own areas (provinces)


c. Objectives of an effective plant layout.

Answer:Only through an efficient layout, the organization can attain the following objectives:
