Question.1. Discuss the use of alternative energy resources.

Answer:Alternative energy is often referenced as any energy source that is an alternative to fossil fuel. These alternatives are intended to address concerns about such fossil fuels. For example, they typically pollute less among other supposed benefits.

Enabling technologies: Heat pumps and Thermal energy storage are technologies which use energy sources that are normally cost-prohibitive

Question.2. Write a long note on the functions of an ecosystem.

Answer:Ecosystem functions are interactive and synergistic rather than discrete (see Framework Boundaries for more information). Different ecosystem functions contribute to the provision of different ecosystem services in different quantities or magnitudes. Each ecosystem function can contribute to more than one ecosystem service, and it takes more than one ecosystem function to provide any ecosystem service.

Question.3. Write notes on ‘loss of habitat’ and ‘poaching’.

Answer:Loss of habitat

Habitat destruction is the process in which natural habitat is rendered unable to support the species present. In this process, the organisms that previously used the site are displaced or destroyed, reducing biodiversity. Habitat destruction by human activity is mainly for the purpose of harvesting natural resources for industry production and urbanization.

Poaching

Poaching has traditionally been defined as the illegal hunting, killing, or capturing of wild animals, usually associated with land use rights.

Question.4. Write a long note on water pollution. Include its effects and control measures (not its sources).

Answer:Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). This form of environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.
