Note: Answer all questions. Kindly note
that answers for 10 marks questions should be approximately of 400 words. Each
question is followed by evaluation scheme.
Question.
1. Discuss the use of alternative energy resources.
Answer: Alternative energy is often
referenced as any energy source that is an alternative to fossil fuel. These
alternatives are intended to address concerns about such fossil fuels. For
example, they typically pollute less among other supposed benefits.
The
nature of what constitutes an alternative energy source has changed
considerably over time, as have controversies regarding energy use. Today,
because of the variety of energy choices and differing goals of their advocates,
defining some energy types as "alternative" is highly controversial.
In a
general sense, alternative energy as it is currently conceived, is that which
is produced or recovered without the undesirable consequences
Question.
2. Write a long note on the functions of an ecosystem.
Answer: Ecosystem functions are
interactive and synergistic rather than discrete (see Framework Boundaries for
more information). Different ecosystem functions contribute to the provision of
different ecosystem services in different quantities or magnitudes. Each
ecosystem function can contribute to more than one ecosystem service, and it
takes more than one ecosystem function to provide any ecosystem service.
Question.
3. Write notes on ‘loss of habitat’ and ‘poaching’.
Answer: Loss of habitat
Habitat
destruction is the process in which natural habitat is rendered unable to
support the species present. In this process, the organisms that previously
used the site are displaced or destroyed, reducing biodiversity. Habitat
destruction by human activity is mainly for the purpose of harvesting natural
resources for industry production and urbanization. Clearing habitats for
agriculture is the principal cause of habitat destruction. Other important
causes of habitat destruction include mining, logging, trawling and urban
sprawl. Habitat destruction is currently ranked as the primary cause of species
extinction worldwide. It is a process of natural environmental change that may
be caused by habitat fragmentation, geological processes,
Question.
4. Write a long note on water pollution. Include its effects and control
measures (not its sources).
Answer: Water pollution is the
contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and
groundwater). This form of environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are
directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment
to remove harmful compounds.
Water
pollution affects the entire biosphere – plants and organisms living in these
bodies of water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to
individual species and population, but also to the natural biological communities.
Some
people believe pollution is an inescapable result of human activity: they argue
that if we want to have factories, cities, ships, cars, oil, and coastal
resorts,
Question.
5. Discuss resource use and sustainable development.
Answer: Sustainable development is a
process for meeting human development goals while sustaining the ability of
natural systems to continue to provide the natural resources and ecosystem
services upon which the economy and society depend. While the modern concept of
sustainable development is derived most strongly from the 1987 Brundtland
Report, it is rooted in earlier ideas about sustainable forest management and
twentieth century environmental concerns. As the concept developed, it has
shifted to focus
Question.
6. Discuss the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, along with its amendments in
1992.
Answer: An Act to provide for the
conservation of forests and for matters connected therewith or ancillary or
incidental thereto.
Be
it enacted by Parliament in the Thirty-first Year of the Republic of India as
follows:-
1. Short title, extent and commencement.

(Conservation) Act,
