Exercise 7 - Writing Feature Story


Objective: Majority of the magazines and the supplements of newspapers depend on the features written on various topics, to retain the interest of the readers. These features are either written by the staff members or by the regular contributors to the newspapers / magazines. This exercise has been planned keeping in mind a majority of newspapers / magazines creating pages to cater to a target audience.

1. Using the following details make an interesting feature for a magazine/newspaper ( word limit 800 words)

Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow in saline coastal habitats in the tropics and subtropics – mainly between latitudes 25° N and 25° S. The saline conditions tolerated by various species range from brackish water, through pure seawater (30 to 40 ppt), to water of over twice the salinity of ocean seawater, where the salt has become concentrated by evaporation. The many species of trees and shrubs adapted to saline conditions are not all closely related, and the term "mangrove" may be used for all of them, or more narrowly only for the mangrove family of plants, the Rhizophoraceae, or even more



2. Open up a newspaper to the local section; for each headline, write about 500 words that led to it.

In the very last minute of the finale at  , two girls collided as they were rushing back to defend their goal. The match had been fast paced and the players were giving it all. One of the girls broke her arm in the collision.




3. Write an interesting ‘travelogue’ piece on the place which you had visited recently. (Word limit 800 words)

Answer: Ooty Trip

We went to Ooty in April 2010 just prior to my joining IBM. Since once I would join office, I wont get much time or have enthusiasm to go on a trip during the weekend, this trip was planned in order to enjoy some last few days of my freedom from the monotonous routine awaiting me.

Ooty to Bangalore distance is 280 kms and it takes about 6 hours to reach there. We hired a cab and although, the journey to Ooti could have been much more


4. Look around your lab for 10 minutes without talking. List your observations. Then write three alternative openings for a feature.

Answer: News style, journalistic style or news writing style is the prose style used for news reporting in media such as newspapers, radio and television.

News style encompasses not only vocabulary and sentence structure, but also the way in which stories present the information in terms of relative importance, tone, and intended audience. The tense used for news style articles is past tense.
