Answer all questions. Kindly note that answers for 10 marks questions should be
approximately of 400 words. Each question is followed by evaluation scheme.
1.
What are processor modes? Explain the three types of processor modes.
Answer: Processor modes refer to the
various ways that the processor creates an operating environment for itself.
Specifically, the processor mode controls how the processor sees and manages
the system memory and the tasks that use it. There are three different modes of
operation, which resulted from the evolution of the PC from its humble
beginnings with the Intel 8088 chip.
Real
Mode: The original IBM PC could only address 1 MB of
system memory, and the original versions of DOS created to work on it were
designed with this in mind. DOS is by its nature a single-tasking operating
system, meaning it can only handle one program running at a time. The decisions
made in these early days have carried forward until
Q.2 List the different PCI signals along with
their functions?
Answer : The PCI bus is the de-facto
standard bus for current-generation personal computers. The mainadvantages for
embedded applications like the STT are:
·
direct implementation in FPGAs
(no data buffers or glue chips)
·
efficient protocol ("data
burst" is the standard transfer)
·
ready availability of
development hardware (
Q.3
Define the following.
a.
Front Sided Bus
Answer: A front-side bus (FSB) was a
computer communication interface (bus) often used in Intel-chip-based computers
during the 1990s and 2000s. The competing EV6 bus served the same function for
AMD CPUs. Both typically carry data between the central processing unit (CPU)
and a memory controller hub, known as the Northbridge.
Depending on the implementation, some
Q4.
What is POST? What are the various steps performed by the POST to check for
resource availability.
Answer: A power-on self-test (POST) is a process
performed by firmware or software routines immediately after a computer or
other digital electronic device is powered on.
This article mainly deals with personal
computers, but many other embedded systems such as those in major appliances,
avionics, communications, or medical equipment also have self-test routines
which are automatically invoked at power-on.
Q. 5
Discuss any five guidelines that we need to follow while troubleshooting the
hardware problem.
Answer: The term troubleshooting refers to
the act of applying diagnostic tools--often heuristically and accompanied by
common sense--to determine the causes of system problems.
Each system problem must be treated on its
own merits. It is not possible to provide a cookbook of actions that resolve
each problem. However, this chapter provides some approaches and procedures,
which used in combination with experience and common sense, can resolve many
problems that might arise. Troubleshooting is a form of problem solving,
Q6.
List the steps involved in installation of software in modem.
Answer: Make sure the modem can work with
your service provider. While uncommon, sometimes you might run into an issue
where the modem you purchased isn't compatible with the internet service
available in your area.
Installation: Remove your old modem. Remember to uninstall any drivers associated
with your old modem and reset your computer after doing so. Also, keep the
cables since you might need them for your new modem.
