1.
What is Environmental Management? Explain
Answer:Environmental Management offers research and opinions on use and
conservation of natural resources, protection of habitats and control of
hazards, spanning the field of environmental management without regard to
traditional disciplinary boundaries. The objective of environmental management
is improved human life quality. It involves the mobilization of resources and
the use of government to administer the use of both natural and economic goods
and services. It is based on the principles of ecology. It uses systems
analysis and conflict resolution to distribute the costs and benefits of
development activities throughout the affected populations and seeks to protect
the activities of development from natural hazards. Conflict identification is
one of the more important tasks in environmental management planning and the
resolution of conflicts is a fundamental part of what makes up
"environmentally sound development."
2.
Explain the excellence in Management systems and the steps identified to
build the business case for EMS.
Answer:Environmental management system (EMS) refers to the management of an
organization's environmental programs in a comprehensive, systematic, planned
and documented manner. It includes the organizational structure, planning and resources
for developing, implementing and maintaining policy for environmental
protection. More formally, EMS is
"a system and database which integrates procedures and processes for
training of personnel, monitoring, summarizing, and reporting of specialized
environmental performance information to internal and external stakeholders of
a firm." The most widely used standard on which an EMS is based is
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001.
3.
Environment and Development are considered as two sides of the same
coin. Explain its impact on Environment.
Answer:Extreme poverty and the degradation of the environment will be at the
center, as two sides of one coin. It cannot be that both the poor and the
planet bear the brunt of crises, such as when water, energy and food become
unaffordable or when resources for fighting climate change and its impacts are
diverted for other needs. People and the Planet are too big to fail! Since the Stockholm Conference of 1972, the
world community has agreed never to speak of the global environment without
also addressing the issue of development, in the sense of improving the lives
of people from the poorest nations. This is how the Brundtland Commission, 10
years later, considering the necessity of growth in poor countries, came to the
concept of sustainable development.
4.
What are the effects of pollutants on living system .Discuss its
effluent guidelines and standards?
Answer:Pollution has become a worldwide phenomenon and so has become concern for
its control. The alarming situation has awakened administrators, engineers,
technocrats, governments and international organizations to take steps to curb
pollution. Educational institutions now include in their curricula various
aspects of pollution (its nature and dimensions, health hazards it has created,
and measures of controlling and managing it, etc.). This book contains a core
course in Environment Management. It will be useful to students of Civil,
Mechanical, Chemical, Biochemical and other disciplines of Engineering and
Technology.
